I’ve always been a firm believer that good music can be judged by its ability to take you somewhere away from where you are… on a journey so to speak. When you can sit back and envision yourself in the crowd at a live concert or feel as though you’re being taken to someplace otherworldly, that’s the test of a great album.
The Dallas-based, instrumental band, Polyphia has been capturing exactly what I’m talking about. Their music has a metal-influence to it, but make no mistake the mix of groove, funk and melody heavily drives each song into it’s own unique sound. The very name “Polyphia” is taken from the word polyphony which is defined as “music whose texture is defined by the interweaving of several melodic lines.”
They have a few EP’s out and recently released a full-length, titled RENAISSANCE. The new album has been rated #5 on top independent label current albums and #14 on top current rock albums by Billboard. I’d suggest giving it a listen. Some of my favorite tracks include the very chilled-out, funky sounding “Amour”, another funk-inspired track, “Crush” and one that’s more on the heavy/melodic side, “Aviator”.
